How to Play World Series Squares in Excel

Baseball fans love a good scoreboard — and with World Series Squares, you can turn every inning into a spreadsheet‑powered thrill. Whether you’re running a friendly office pool or tracking stats with friends, Excel makes it easy to organize, score, and celebrate each inning’s winner.

What is World Series Squares?

Think of it as the baseball version of Super Bowl Squares. You create a 10×10 grid — one axis for the American League team, the other for the National League team. Each square represents a unique score combination.

But here’s the twist: this pool uses progressive scoring. Instead of paying out based on the inning’s score alone, you pay based on the cumulative score at the end of each inning.

How Progressive Scoring Works

At the end of every inning, look at the total score so far for each team. The square matching those totals wins. If the same score repeats in later innings, that same square wins again. When a new run changes the total, the winning square updates to match the new cumulative score. This is all calculated automatically by formulas.

Update: adding the ability to switch between standard scoring (every inning is independent) and progressive (total runs)

🏈 How the “Populate_Helmets” Macro Works

The included macro is the engine that powers the visual layout. Here’s a simple breakdown of what it does behind the scenes:

1. It loops through every matchup cell

The macro scans the schedule grid — row by row and column by column — looking for team names.

2. It cleans the team name

If a matchup includes an “@” symbol (e.g., “@Dallas”), the macro removes it so the team name matches the master list.

3. It compares the team name to the master team list

The spreadsheet stores:

  • Column C → official team names
  • Column D → corresponding helmet image names

When the macro finds a match, it knows which helmet graphic to use.

4. It copies the correct helmet image

Using the helmet’s shape name, the macro:

  • Selects the correct helmet graphic
  • Copies it
  • Pastes it into the correct matchup cell

5. It centers the helmet perfectly

The macro calculates the cell’s height and width, then positions the helmet so it sits neatly in the middle — no manual resizing required.

6. It renames each pasted helmet

Each pasted image gets a unique name (based on team + row + column) so the spreadsheet stays organized.

7. It sets helmets to “Move and Size with Cells”

This ensures:

  • Filters work correctly
  • Sorting doesn’t break the layout
  • Helmets stay aligned when rows or columns shift

In short: You enter the schedule → the macro fills in every helmet automatically.
